SUMMARY:Book Club - The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters
DESCRIPTION:Book Club – The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters\nLed by Marcy Manas and Liz Morley\n16:00 Tuesday 24 November\nOur Book Talk meets once a month. Books are available to borrow from the Gura Family Memorial Library. \nOur November choice is The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. \nOne family’s deepest pain. Another’s darkest secret. Who will they be when the truth comes out? \nOn a hot day in 1960s Maine\, six-year old Joe watches his little sister\, Ruthie\, sitting on her favourite rock at the edge of the blueberry fields\, while their family\, Mi’kmaq people from Nova Scotia\, pick fruit. That afternoon\, Ruthie vanishes without a trace. As the last person to see her\, Joe will be forever haunted by grief\, guilt and the agony of imagining how his life could have been. \nIn an affluent suburb nearby\, Norma is growing up as the only child of unhappy parents. She is smart\, precocious and bursting with questions she isn’t allowed to ask – questions about her missing baby photos; questions about her dark skin; questions about the strange\, vivid dreams of campfires and warm embraces that return night after night. Norma senses there are things her parents aren’t telling her\, but it will take decades to unravel the secrets they have kept buried since she was a little girl. \nThe Berry Pickers is an exquisitely moving story of unrelenting hope\, unwavering love\, and the power of family – even in the face of grief and betrayal. \nMembers pre-paid NIS 25\nNonmembers NIS 35 (Cash only at the door) \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 (Sunday-Thursday 9:00-12:30) or pay at the door. \nPrepaid tickets available until noon on the day of this event. \nNearby Parking: (one block north of Netanya AACI\, approach from the north on Shmuel Hanatziv to turn right into the driveway just before the traffic circle) \nUsing Waze: https://waze.com/ul/hsv8zcjvhf \nUsing Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/teDPagS7GRUi5VzY8

SUMMARY:Dr. Avraham Roos: The Secret Lives of Words
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Lives of Words\nPresented by Dr. Avraham Roos\n19:30 Tuesday 24 November \n\nHave you ever wondered why October is the tenth month when its name means “eight\,” how a sandwich got its name\, or what a jeep\, a tulip\, and a slogan have in common? The Secret Lives of Words takes you on an entertaining journey through the surprising origins of English vocabulary. Discover how words are borrowed from other languages\, created from names and places\, shortened\, blended\, reshaped\, and sometimes completely transformed in meaning. Behind many ordinary words lie extraordinary stories—and after this lecture\, you may never look at the English language in quite the same way again. \n\n \nDr. Avraham Roos is an experienced educator\, linguist\, and public speaker who has lectured widely to English-speaking adult audiences throughout Israel on subjects ranging from Jewish history and culture to language\, art\, and general history. Born in the Netherlands\, he made aliyah in 1991 and has since built a long career in education\, including teaching in the English Departments of several teacher-training colleges\, where he has trained future English teachers in language and methodology. Dr. Roos holds an MA from the University of Liverpool and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam\, where his research focused on the history and development of English translations of the Passover Haggadah. His lectures combine scholarly depth with accessible storytelling\, personal insight\, humor\, and a strong visual dimension\, making complex and sometimes unexpected topics engaging for a broad adult audience.\n\n  \n\n \nMembers pre-paid NIS 40\nMembers at door and non-members NIS 60 \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 (Sunday-Thursday 8:30-12:30) or pay at the door (cash only).

SUMMARY:YAD SARAH – Israel's Largest and Most Important Charity - Zvi Swerdlove
DESCRIPTION:YAD SARAH – Israel’s Largest and Most Important Charity\nPresented by Zvi Swerdlove\n11:00 Sunday 29 November \n \nAsk ten Israelis you know what they know about Yad Sarah. Chances are half of them will smile and tell you how some family member needed a pair of crutches or a wheelchair or a breast pump or maybe even a booster car seat for a newborn baby and was given one in a few minutes without filling out endless forms and going through long\, annoying bureaucratic rigmarole to demonstrate their need. \nIn fact\, in most cases\, all they had to do was come into the building on Ichilov Street here in Netanya and pay a small deposit which was returned to them when they brought it back. It also rents out hospital beds\, oxygen concentrators\, cranes for bedridden patients and anything else you may need to keep a family member at home rather than in a hospital or nursing home. A little-known statistic is that 50% of Israeli families have borrowed medical equipment from Yad Sarah at one time or another. \nZvi Swerdlove\, a dedicated\, long-time volunteer\, will be describing the many different services Yad Sarah offers and how it can help you. \nBorn in Boston\, he made aliyah in 1969 and\, after 5 years’ service in the IDF\, he began his professional career working as a translator. For many years\, he also ran a second-hand book store in Netanya called the Reader’s Corner. You may also have seen him perform in the Netanya AACI Drama Group or\, years ago\, in the Netanya AACI Music Theater. \nPlease come and hear Zvi speak! He is particularly interested in answering any questions you might have about Yad Sarah in general or specific medical equipment someone in your family might need. \nMembers Prepaid – NIS 25 \nNon-members and Members at the Door – NIS 35 \nPrepaid ticketing available until 08:00 the day of the event. Purchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 or pay at the door.

SUMMARY:Tiyul: From Sea Turtles to Secret Ships
DESCRIPTION:From Sea Turtles to Secret Ships \nTuesday 1 December \nJoin us for an interesting and educational day combining nature conservation with a fascinating chapter of Israel’s history. \nOur first stop is the National Sea Turtle Rescue Centre near Mikhmoret. We will learn about efforts to protect endangered sea turtles along Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. The centre treats injured and sick turtles harmed by fishing equipment\, plastic pollution\, boat strikes and other human activities. Discover how these remarkable creatures are rescued\, rehabilitated and\, whenever possible\, returned to the sea\, as well as the challenges they face and how we can help protect marine life. \nWe will then continue to Haifa and the Clandestine Immigration and Naval Museum\, which tells the story of Jewish immigration to Mandatory Palestine during the British Mandate and the development of Israel’s naval forces. Through photographs\, historical documents\, exhibits and restored vessels\, we will discover the daring efforts to bring Holocaust survivors and other Jewish refugees to their ancestral homeland despite British restrictions. A highlight is the immigrant ship Af Al Pi Chen\, illustrating the hardships and determination of those who undertook these dangerous voyages. \nThis memorable outing combines environmental awareness\, maritime heritage and inspiring stories of courage\, sacrifice and perseverance that helped shape the State of Israel. \nMembers NIS 180     Non-members NIS 210 \nPurchase tickets below or call the box office 09-8330950 (Sunday-Thursday 8:30-12:30). \nDepart heading north\, first pick-up: Tennis courts 09:10 \nNotify the box office of preferred pick-up point. \nReturn: approx. 15:45

SUMMARY:Book Club - Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard
DESCRIPTION:Book Club – Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard\nLed by Marcy Manas and Liz Morley\n16:00 Tuesday 22 December\nOur Book Talk meets once a month. Books are available to borrow from the Gura Family Memorial Library. \nOur December choice is Count the Ways by Joyce Maynard. \nNew York Times bestselling author Joyce Maynard explores the complexities of family life\, from the hopeful beginnings of young marriage to parenthood\, divorce and the lasting consequences of tragedy. Eleanor and Cam meet at a crafts fair in Vermont in the early 1970s. She is an artist and writer; he makes wooden bowls. Within four years\, they have three children and a seemingly idyllic life on a New Hampshire farm. For Eleanor\, family traditions\, cosy evenings and watching her children grow are everything she has ever wanted. \nThen a terrible accident\, caused by Cam’s negligence\, shatters their world. Unable to forgive him\, Eleanor becomes consumed by bitterness\, while Cam finds comfort in a new relationship. As the years pass\, the fractured family faces unexpected challenges\, painful choices and revelations. One child undergoes a gender transition\, while another breaks completely with her mother. \nSpanning decades\, Maynard’s poignant novel follows the five family members as their lives intertwine\, separate and occasionally reconnect. With compassion and insight\, she examines the enduring effects of the past and the difficult journey towards understanding and forgiveness. This is a moving story of home\, parenthood\, love\, loss and learning when to hold on—and when to let go. \nMembers NIS 25 \nNon-members NIS 35 (cash only at the door) \nPurchase tickets below\, call the box office 09-8330950 (Sunday-Thursday 9:00-12:30) or pay at the door.

SUMMARY:Mayor Avi Slama: From Netanya – For Netanya: A New Chapter at City Hall
DESCRIPTION:From Netanya – For Netanya: A New Chapter at City Hall\nPresented by Mayor Avi Slama\n19:30 Monday 11 January 2027\nPlease join us for an open\, wide-ranging conversation with Netanya’s new mayor\, Avi Slama. Mayor Slama will share his vision for Netanya\, his priorities for the city\, and how he plans to turn that vision into reality. \nMayor Slama is first and foremost\, a Netanyati — born and educated here\, and now raising his own family in Netanya. He served in the IDF Intelligence Corps.\, and\, before entering public life\, built a successful career in banking and finance. Whilst finance was his profession\, Netanya increasingly became his calling and in 2018\, he was elected to the Netanya City Council. Over time\, he developed his own vision for the city’s future and on January 20\, 2026\, Avi was elected Mayor with approximately 68 percent of the vote — giving him a very clear mandate to lead the city into its next chapter. \nAvi hit the ground running. In just a few short months\, his administration has already begun to have a significant impact. The Mayor has placed considerable emphasis on the everyday relationship between residents and the municipality. He has spoken about changing the culture of City Hall so that residents are viewed not simply as taxpayers\, but as people whom the municipality exists to serve. At the same time\, revitalising central Netanya — including Independence Square — has become an important objective\, along with improving the infrastructure and public spaces that shape the daily life of the city. \nMuch of his first year in office has unfolded against the extraordinary security challenges facing Israel. The Mayor and his administration have guided Netanya through periods of emergency — coordinating with the Home Front Command\, police and emergency services; opening shelters; managing the school system and ensuring that residents receive the information and assistance they need. Mayor Slama has said that\, ultimately\, he wants his administration to be judged in three areas: municipal service\, education and infrastructure. Following his remarks\, there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. \nNo charge for this event.
